A man convicted of posing as a police officer to obtain money has been sentenced by the Suva Magistrates Court today.
Binesh Pillay was handed a 15 months’ imprisonment term after he was found guilty last month of one count each of obtaining a financial advantage by deception and false or misleading information.
He pretended to be a police officer at the Valelevu Police Station and obtained the sum of $300 from a fellow inmate’s wife.
This after he promised to assist in the release of the inmate from the Suva Remand Centre.
He also then provided a false residential address to a court officer while the officer was filling out the accused’s bail form.
In delivering the sentence, the Magistrate said that the accused took advantage of the vulnerability of the person he obtained the money from.
