Implementation of Clean Environment Policy to begin soon

The Ministry of Waterways and Environment will soon begin the implementation of their new policy called Clean Environment Policy.

Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy says this policy provides guidance for securing clean Fiji for Fijians through decentralized community based, awareness, readiness and litter enforcement programs.

Dr Reddy says the aim of the policy is to contribute to the Ministries long term ambition to make Fiji cleaner for citizens and visitors.

He says they will establish a litter prevention community clean environment unit within the Department of Environment to organize clean up campaigns, annual clean schools and national clean village/community competitions.

Dr Reddy adds there a penalties in place if anyone breaches the Act.

“We want to go hard in terms of enforcing our litter Act, so that those people who are breaching the litter Act, they are fined and if they don’t pay their fine in the required specified period of time, then we will prosecute them.”

The Minister reiterates that the public can upload or send videos and photographs to his Ministries if they find anyone littering.
