Much of the illegal harvesting, unsustainable practices and excessive logging in Fiji’s timber industry have not been recorded over the years.

Permanent Secretary for Forestry Pene Baleinabuli says forestry makes significant contributions to the economy however much of this is not recorded legally.

Baleinabuli says it is actually contributing to the black economy.

Major consultations with stakeholders were undertaken regarding these issues in the Western Division today.

He says despite efforts being put in to monitor activities, various players have continued to allow for leakages which reflect negatively on the economy.

Discussions also centered on strengthening relationships within the industry.
