Hundreds turn up to register

July 3, 2012 5:20 am

Hundreds of people turned up various registration centres around the country today to register for the next general elections.

Permanent Secretary for Elections Mere Vuniwaqa says a few glitches arose at the registration centres.

“There are a few issues that have arisen this morning – mainly to do with logistical issues and we are picking up on those issues straightaway and addressing them as we go along. Today is the first day of our registration and we hope to iron this out from tomorrow onwards.”

The Elections Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum visited some of the centres today.

“People are expressing their surprise as to how quickly it takes and the process is quite smooth. I think quite a lot of people are feeling proud about the fact that they now have a card that they can carry around to say that they are now a voter.”

Registration will continue for eight weeks.
