Cancer is responsible for ten percent of deaths in the country and last year alone an estimated one thousand five hundred and forty-four people were diagnosed with the killer disease.

In an effort to raise more awareness, the Fiji Cancer Society held its first ever open day yesterday.

Fiji Cancer Society Media officer Kaliova Turagaiviu says the open day also provided an opportunity for people to know about Fiji Cancer Society’s services.

“One of the services we provide is transporting our clients or patients from their doorstep to their medical clinics or reviews and back to their homes. We also provide boat transfers if they need to come from the maritime zones to the main urban centers.”

The major focus of the open day was early detection as breast cancer is a common cause of death for females in Fiji followed by cervical cancer.

Meanwhile, this month has been dedicated for women cancer.
