HIV/AIDS cases identified

Fiji has an increasing total of 610 HIV/AIDS cases, whereby 64 new cases were confirmed last year as HIV positive, similar to 2013.

CEO for HIV/AIDS Board Sereima Vatuvatu says, it was seen, in past years there were more male confirmed to be HIV positive.

Since the introduction for the Prevention of Parent to Child Transmission program, more pregnant females were tested and confirmed HIV positive in 2014.

She says, with PPTCT program, pregnant moms are screened and they commence into Antiretroviral Treatment, to reduce the transmission of HIV to unborn babies.

She adds mothers who were tested during their first ante natal clinic booking were HIV negative and so is their unborn child.

There were 58 percent of HIV cases are females and 42 percent for males were confirmed positive with HIV early 2013 and late 2014.
