The Shri Sanatan Dharam Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji is condemning spousal rape saying it is now formalizing strategies to speak to men who follow their faith to put an end to rape within marriages.

Sabha’s acting national secretary Virendra Lal says safe sex talk should not be a taboo issue anymore.

‘’You cannot force yourself to anybody and the law applies if you’re on the streets or if you are in your bedroom, and you cannot force anyone to love you, so it has to come from within a person, and we should respect that’’.

Lal says during marriages newlywed couples are counseled and the men know marital rape is a no-no.

The maximum sentence for rape is life imprisonment.
