The Ministry of Housing is working towards ensuring more Fijians having access to high quality housing at economical rates.

With around two point four million dollars spent on 36 new low cost housing flats in Kalabu, Nasinu, a number of other areas have being earmarked for development.

Minister responsible Parveen Kumar says a number of institutions will be collectively working on the project.

“We’ve already started, fortunately we also have budget allocations in the new financial year whereby we intend to work with Fiji National Provident Fund, one is in Matavolivoli, the other one is in Newtown, this is the two that needs to go as soon as possible but the other one that we’re looking at right now is at Nepani and Davuilevu.”

Low cost housing is offered through the Public Rental Board to those Fijians whose joint income is less than 16 thousand dollars.

In the new Kalabu flats, households in one bedroom flats are allowed a maximum of six persons with a rental fee of 50 dollars a week or two hundred dollars a month.
