The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission is concerned with the high number of scam related complaints.

Acting chief executive, Seymour Singh says the Commission will be introducing new mechanisms to address this growing issue.

Singh says in 2014/2015 scam related cases were taken directly to court.

But in 2016 the Commission introduced mediation, however, this saw very few cases resolved.

“Scam cases we received was around 28 for 2018, for 2017 was 35 cases and 2016, there were about 21. So these cases that we had received were actually accepting money and not delivering goods to the people.”

Singh says to date this year the Commission has received twenty-eight complaints.

He says majority of these cases are related to land sales, construction companies not completing buildings, travel agents and online scams.
