The government is now more focused on acting on recommendations of reports on natural disasters.
The Minister for National Disaster Management Inia Seruiratu says in the past the reports were collecting dust on the shelves.
“Disasters after disasters, we have very good reports, compiled by SPC, IMF, the World Bank but it is all filed away and we wait for the next one. We are always more willing to provide funds post disaster but little is done pre-disaster and the terminology in Fiji changed from 2012 – we shifted from a culture of reaction to a culture of prevention.”
Senior Policy makers from the region met in Nadi yesterday to discuss policies to enhance macroeconomic resilience to natural disasters in the Pacific Islands.
The High-level Pacific Island Dialogue focused on a number of impacts of natural disasters the lessons learned from them.
Fiji co-hosted the workshop with the IMF.
