Head of Health Protection at the Ministry of Health Dr Aalisha Sahu khan says herd immunization is one way to cure measles.
Herd immunity is a form of indirect protection from measles where a large percentage of a population has become immune to infection.
Dr Sahu khan says babies below 6 months , pregnant women, and those allergic to the medicine will not be vaccinated – but they will be protected through herd immunity.
She says this will act as a buffer for those who are not immunized.
“They are protected because of the community get vaccinated. One of the best way to stop measles outbreak is vaccination because we cannot stop people coming from overseas coming into the country but we can stop the spread of measles.”
A measles outbreak in Wailali settlement in Wainadoi has to-date been confined to four confirmed cases.
