The village of Nasau in Kadavu is experiencing the full effects of Tropical Cyclone Gita intensifying into a category five system as it slowly leaves the Fiji waters.
Village headman Wisale Naga says the weather worsened overnight bringing with it strong winds and heavy rain.
Naga says the strong wind has brought down trees and fallen branches.
He says the villagers are concerned with the safety of their homes.
“When we woke up this morning there were really strong winds blowing. Everyone is safe still inside their houses. An evacuation centre is provided for the villagers if any circumstances come across.”
Naga says two evacuation centres have been activated with the village community hall and his house occupied by those living close to the coast.
He adds all temporary sheds have been removed and safety shutters have been installed.
The villagers are prepared for the adverse weather conditions with the necessary emergency necessities.
