Heavy rain alert and strong wind warning for Fiji

A heavy rain alert and strong wind warning is now in place for the Fiji group with Tropical Disturbance TD04F located 470 km North West of Nadi.

Director of the Fiji Meteorological Service Ravin Kumar says the concern is the heavy and frequent rain that is expected over the coming days with TD04F expected to intensify over the next 24 to 48 hours.

“The major concern and strong winds associated with this system, therefore the following warnings and alerts remain in force for the whole of Fiji group. A heavy rain alert is now in force for all of Fiji as well as a strong wind warning for all land areas and a strong wind warning for all Fiji’s waters".

On the current forecast, there is a low to moderate chance that the current system will develop into a cyclone in the next 72 hours.

Kumar says, if it does develop into a cyclone, it’s likely to be a category one, possible marginal category two cyclone which is no way as powerful as Cyclone Winston that hit Fiji in February.
