The Health and Medical Services Ministry has rolled out a two million dollar National Iron and Micro Nutrition Supplement program in eighty-nine schools.

Project Officer, Kiti Soravaki says this follows the National Nutrition Survey conducted by the Ministry which revealed that anemia is one of the major health problems in school students.

“Almost one in every two students are affected with anemia and in the under-five around sixty percent of the children under the age of five suffer from anemia as well.”

Soravaki says NIMS is a five year project whereby the Ministry aims to cover up to ninety percent of schools.

She says anemia can also be caused if children have worms so they’re de-worming every child before supplementing them with iron tablets.
