Hearing impaired students to be enrolled into mainstream schools

The government is looking to mainstream students with hearing difficulties into the main school system.

Launching Sign Language Week, Education Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy says they will provide the necessary facilities and resources to make this a reality.

“I want to today let you know that our Prime Minister Bainimarama and the Ministry of Finance will make some major announcements in the budget to recognise that we will treat them equally if not favourable and provide the resources they need to develop them to lead a normal life.”

Dr Reddy says they are also looking at incorporating sign language into the teacher training curriculum.

The Ministry will also increase the number of sign language interpreters and provide hearing aids for all deaf students.
