Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has strongly opposed those who continuously neglect people with mental illness.

Bainimarama made this statement while speaking at the opening of the new Drug and Alcohol Unit at the St Giles Hospital today.

Bainimarama says there are people who have been critical about the great work the St Giles Hospital has put in over the years.

He says instead of passing judgment, there is a need to offer a helping hand when affected Fijians are trying to heal.

“Unfortunately, the stigma around mental health still lingers within Fijian society. Bullying persists, especially on social media, where we see keyboard warriors making fun and joking about St. Giles, and undermining the life-saving work of this institution and its staff.”

The Prime Minister says rather than perpetuating hurtful stereotypes and stigmas about mental health conditions, we must recognize them with compassion.
