Specialised doctors to be engaged as locum arrangement

Concerns on the waiting time at hospitals and health centres were raised following the recent surge in flu and virus cases.

Health Minister Dr. Ifereimi Waqainabete has confirmed that apart from general practitioners, specialized doctors will also be engaged on a temporary arrangement.

Dr Waqainabete says this arrangement is one of the key strategies undertaken by the Ministry to reduce patient waiting time and reduce workload for doctors.

He adds they have not limited this temporary arrangement to only general practitioners.

“We are grateful that GP’s are able to provide support for us and also we utilize their expertise. And it is not limited only to general practitioners. We also had specialist locumed to the service to prove support in their area of expertise.”

The Minister adds they’re also looking at recruiting more medical officials as a way forward.
