Concerns have been raised that Fijians in the working group are being detected with diabetes.
Diabetes Fiji Trustee Professor Eddie McCaig says this figure is alarming.
According to McCaig, sixty thousand Fijians have this disease and its complications leads to foot problems, eye and kidney problems.
“The age group is the working age group so the people with foot problems might be 40 year olds, and so the longer years you have had diabetes the higher incidence of complications so if you get diabetes if it is detected at about 30, by the time you are 50 you will get all the problems.”
He believes more effort needs to be put on the preventative measures.
Meanwhile, he says out of the 60,000 people, half of them would need some form of eye surgery in the coming years adding that more young people are losing their eyesight due to diabetes.
