Late presentation of diabetes continues to be the leading cause of amputation in the country says the representative from the Diabetic Hub in Lautoka Dr Ajesh Sen.

Speaking during the World Diabetes Symposium in Lautoka, Dr Sen stresses the importance of regular checkups and exercise, taking the correct medication for diabetes and eating healthy.

“The issue is awareness so if a person an infection in their leg than they present it to the hospital but it’s too late and we have had cases in their 50’s and 60’s when they come to the hospital for a cough or something else and they get tested with high sugar.”

Dr Sen also says that a number of cases they received were husband and wife sharing the same diabetic medication.

He strongly states that this was not safe as every patience has a different diagnosis.
