April 8, 2015 6:34 am

The Ministry of Health will be establishing a new model called the PEN model or the Package of Essential Non Communicable Diseases prevention at primary health care level.

National Adviser for NCDs Dr Isimeli Tukana says the PEN model is mainly to help doctors and nurses to treat patients accordingly.

“In PEN when the nurses test you, screen you and say you have an abnormal pressure, you have an abnormal sugar, we’ll push you into that system and in that system there will be a dietician, who will talk about your diet, there will be a physio therapist or somebody who will talk about your exercise and the nurse who will be the educator plus the doctor.”

According to Dr Tukana NCD is a lifestyle introduced disease so the way to prevent it should also be a lifestyle treatment instead of just taking in medicine.
