Health Ministry keeps an eye on zika virus

The Health Ministry is keeping an eye on zika virus – a mosquito borne disease in the country.

Communicable diseases national advisor Dr Mike Kama says they have sent samples of 19 suspected cases to their reference lab in French Polynesia for testing.

Dr Kama says they have received results of six samples and will alert the public on the virus after formalizing them.

“So basically we’ve been also doing tests for zika. The Ministry has just been notified recently about our zika virus test – so basically what ministry will make in a couple of days time is basically a statement on the zika virus situation that we have.”

The symptoms for zika fever is similar to chikungunya and dengue where people will feel feverish, have joint pains and rashes.
