The National Fire Authority is urging families to have a fire evacuation plan in their homes.
CEO John O’Connor says children should be aware of this evacuation plan.
Last week – two children were alone at their home in Nausori when the home caught fire.
They were trapped inside and were rescued by a neighbor.
According to NFA – they were playing with matches.
O’Connor says the onus is on parents to ensure children know about fire safety.
Tips that we have been putting out – we are urging all home owners to have an evacuation plan to discuss that plan with the kids so that in case of a fire – priority is always to make sure that no one gets injured or burned. So – if parents can take time in the afternoon to discuss with their children about this – for their own safety and the safety of the community.
O’Connor adds – there should also be strict supervision with school holidays commencing next Friday.
