Harmat acquitted

Estonian national, Risto Harmat who was alleged to have helped Ratu Tevita Mara Uluilakeba escape to Tonga was acquitted this afternoon by the Suva Magistrates Court.

Harmat’s lawyer Gavin O’Driscoll had filedfor a no case to answer.

Magistrate Mohammed Saneem ruled that the prosecution did not produce enough evidence to substantiate the charges laid on Harmat.

Magistrate Saneem also ordered that Harmat’s possessions including his boat and passport be released to him after the end of the appeal period.

O’Driscoll asked the court for costs as the State had caused delays leading to unnecessary expenses.

A ruling on the costs will be made later.
