Handyman charged with rape denied bail

A handyman of a day care in Suva who is charged with one count of rape was denied bail by the Suva Magistrates court yesterday.

38-year-old, David Ali is alleged to have raped a three-year-old girl who attends the Day Care, where Ali is employed.

It’s alleged the offence occurred in August, this year when the accused called the victim to a secluded area at the school premises and indecently assaulted her.

The matter was reported by the victim’s mother after the young girl complained of genital pain.

In court today, Ali was served with disclosures and sought the assistance of Legal Aid to represent him.

The Magistrate highlighted that this is a serious offence and has transferred the case to the Suva High Court.

The Magistrate informed Ali he has 21 days to file his alibi statement with the court registry.

Ali claims in that during the time of the alleged incident he was not present at the day care.

The Magistrate informed Ali he can re-submit a fresh bail application in the Suva High court.

Ali has been further remanded.
