Grandfather to be sentenced on Monday

A 65-year old grandfather found guilty of one count of sexual assault will be sentenced by the Suva High court on Monday.

The man was charged with two counts of sexual assault and one count of rape.

Suva High court Judge Justice Vincent Perera found him guilty of one count of sexual assault and not guilty of another count of sexual assault and rape.

The man sexually assaulted his granddaughter between January 2012 and December 2014 in Nasinu.

The victim was seven-years-old at the time of the incident and was staying with her grandparents while her parents lived in Lautoka.

In sentencing submissions the defense counsel informed the court that the accused is married and is remorseful for what has happened.

The prosecution however informed the court that there was an aged gap of around fifty years between the accused and the victim.

The prosecution also stated that the man took advantage of the vulnerability and helplessness and that there was a relationship between the accused and the victim.

In sentencing submission the prosecution also said that the he showed complete disregard to thee society’s rules and also breached the trust as a grandfather.

The court was also informed that the man has spent five months in remand and that he has number of previous conviction even though it has surpassed 10 years.

The man has been remanded in custody and will be sentenced on Monday.
