A 65-year old grandfather who was found guilty of one count of sexual assault has been sentenced to three years and seven months by Suva High Court Judge, Justice Vincent Perera, in the last hour.

The man sexually assaulted his granddaughter between January 2012 and December 2014 in Nasinu.

While sentencing the man, Judge Perera says the victim was under his care and protection and he took advantage of her vulnerability, breaching her trust whilst being 52 years her senior.

The victim was seven-years-old at the time of the incident and was staying with her grandparents while her parents lived in Lautoka.

The man was charged with two counts of sexual assault and one count of rape.

Justice Perera found him guilty of one count of sexual assault and not guilty of another count of sexual assault and rape last Friday.

The accused has been given a non-parole sentence of two-years seven months.

He has also been issued a permanent Domestic Violence Restraining Order not to have any form of contact with the victim.
