Grandfather jailed for raping his two granddaughters

The Labasa High Court has sentenced a man to sixteen years imprisonment for raping his two granddaughters in 2013 and 2014 in Rabi in the Northern division.

Sixty-four-year old man was found guilty of six counts of rape.

The court was told that the man used a cane knife to threaten his granddaughters before raping them.

They were thirteen and fifteen years old during the time of the incident.

While handling down the sentence Judge Salesi Temo said the perpetrator has breached the trust of two young girls who looked up to him for guidance and security.

He said as the grandfather, the man was supposed to look after them and see that no one harms them, but the act he carried out was unthinkable.

The man must serve fifteen years behind the bars before being eligible for parole.
