Grandfather behind bars for raping his granddaughter

A 64 –year- old man who raped his seven year old granddaughter in 2014 has been sentenced to twelve years imprisonment by the Suva High Court.

The man was charged with one count of rape, one count of attempted rape and one count of sexual assault.

However, he was convicted of rape and sexual assault. He was found not guilty of attempted rape.

The Court heard that the man and his wife were responsible to look after the grand children including the victim.

High Court Judge Justice Vincent Parera said that the man had a responsibility to look after the victim and to protect her from the evils of the world however he took advantage of her vulnerability.

Justice Parera also said that there was a breach of trust and the age gap between the two was 57 years.

The man was also convicted of criminal intimidation in relation to the case.

He will have to serve eight years before being eligible for parole.
