Govt reviews Sugar Industry Act

Government is currently reviewing the Sugar Industry Act as part of restructuring the industry says Permanent Secretary for Sugar Colonel Manasa Vaniqi.

Vaniqi says Governmnet has identified loopholes in the Act which has been in place since 1984.

He says after the review is completed it will be taken to the Solicitor General’s Office before it is submitted to cabinet.

Vaniqi says one of the essential components of the Act is the Master Awards which controls the contractual relationship between FSC and the cane farmers.

He says the review is necessary so the production level can increase because there is a failure to efficiently convert cane to sugar at its mills.
