Government vessels on standby for festive season

December 4, 2018 6:30 pm

The government fleet of vessels are on standby should there be a need to transport commuters during this festive season.

Three vessels were detained last month for not adhering to the law and boat operators were told to fulfill whatever is required to begin operation.

Maritime Safety Authority Chief Executive Captain Philip Hill has confirmed there’s no need to worry about services provided to some islands as the government fleet will fill in the gaps.

Captain Hill says other vessels will also be checked by officers.

”I emphasized with our staff the need to re-look at this vessels that are operating .This is not being done before but we are getting into the system whereby vessels operating ,we still have to go and inspect unannounced so that we see that they maintained the standard that they have been issued with a survey certificate.”

205 vessels are currently providing services in the country whereas more than 3000 are small boats.
