Government to review labour laws

December 8, 2014 11:48 pm

The Government will review all labour laws that are currently in existence.

In parliament today, opposition member Prem Singh had directed a question to the Government about whether the Essential National Industries (Employment) Decree 2011 would be reviewed amended or appealed in conformity to international labour organisations conventions that Fiji has rectified.

In response Minister for Employment Productivity and Industrial Relations Jioje Konrote in Parliament says the Government has a plan in place for this in the next few years.

“We would through frank and sincere tripartite dialogue progressively review all labour laws to ensure compatibility with the constitution whilst at the same time ensuring that the economic well-being of Fiji continues to be protected and enhanced. We also say that in reviewing these laws the Fijian Government will work closely with the ILO and will invite them to be a part of the review process.”

He says while the Government cannot give a definite time frame because it would take time following consultations and negotiations, they plan to begin the review as soon as possible.
