Government to assist more communities vulnerable to climate change

December 30, 2016 12:20 am

Government will be assisting more communities that are vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says its effects are only projected to get worse in the future but Fiji must continue fighting.

“I assure you that my Government will continue to find ways we can work with your community to help you succeed and that we will be unyielding on the global stage in our efforts to protect Fiji and the entire world from the consequences of climate change. But as we look to next year, the fight must continue because the effects of climate change are already here and they are only projected to get worse.”

Commissioner Central Setareki Tale confirmed to FBC News that two communities in the Central Division have been assisted through the government’s disaster risk reduction programme.

There are over fifty 50 villages and communities around Fiji that need to be relocated to higher ground due to rising sea levels.

Bainimarama was speaking to villagers in Kumi, Tailevu yesterday.
