Government stops eviction of families

September 3, 2018 6:46 pm

A day after the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation revealed that the People’s Community Network was going to evict 11 families from the Lagilagi Housing in Raiwaqa, the Minister for Housing Parveen Kumar has intervened putting a stop to the evictions.

PCN Director Semiti Qalowasa says the notices were issued because there were no rent payments received from the families in question.

However, Kumar says no one will be evicted from their units and there isn’t a need to rush into making people homeless.

The Minister says the families will not be forced to vacate and discussions will take place with PCN on avenues the families can follow to clear their rental arrears.

Meanwhile Qalowasa says it was never the PCN’s intention to evict the families.

“I will try my very best not to put anyone out but once we move to body corp who will look after the business arm of PCN than we will have no say in that, now that we are still here we are assisting them.”

He adds the network was forced to take action as they rely on rent payments to continue development on the new housing units.
