Government increases the tree planting target

November 11, 2019 4:32 pm

Planting more trees will continue Fiji’s global leadership on climate change.

Forestry Minister Osea Naiqamu says given the seriousness and the urgency to address climate change, the Government has now increased the tree-planting target from 4-Million-Trees-in-4-Years to 30-Million-Trees-in-15-Years.

Naiqamu says this new target is part of Fiji’s nature-based solutions to the threat of climate change.

He says this should send a clear message that even though the carbon emissions are very minimal, we are not just going to wait for highly industrialized countries to take action.

Ministry of Forestry is repositioning itself to coordinate this new planting target starting from January 2020 when they will try to plant two million trees per year.

Naiqamu says Fiji has collectively planted 1 million Trees in 10 months.
