A total of 3,698 families living in squatter settlements have been assisted by government through the Squatters Upgrading Programme.

This was confirmed by Local government and Housing Minister Parveen Bala while responding to the question raised by Dr Brij Lal in parliament today.

Bala says this assistance has enabled these families to access a ninety nine year residential lease and the assistance is currently under review.

“The future plan for the squatter upgrading programme is now being reviewed by the ministerial committee which consists of Minister for Land, Minister for Rural Development, Minister for Women and me as per cabinet decision 242 in 2015.”

About 220 squatter settlements in the country, Bala says government will do whatever it can to assist these areas.
