Song, dance, poems, skits and speeches were the order of the day as the Labasa community gathered to mark the arrival of Girmitiyas to Fiji.

Commissioner Northern, Jovesa Vocea says the Girmit Remembrance Day must not always be an occasion to cry about but to celebrate the sacrifices, perseverance and foresight of the Girmitiyas.

Vocea says Girmitiya’s willingness to persevere and never give up is a testimony to the very impressive and commendable achievements of their descendants today both in the private and public sectors.

“We must reflect on the positives that have come out of the Girmit system and not dwell on the negatives that are bygones. Let me assure us all today that the pain they endured in those times is what makes us more resilient today.”

Vocea adds, the Girmit pioneers have written their history and have written them well leaving behind legacies and principles that continue to challenge many of us today.

Hundreds gathered at the Labasa Civic Center this morning to celebrate 140 years since the first Girmitiyas came to Fiji.
