A large crowd gathered at the Civic Center in Nadi to mark the Girmit Remembrance Day celebrations.
Local Government Minister, Parveen Kumar, says this day provides an opportunity to better understand the history as to why the Girmityas came to Fiji.
Kumar says the event is set aside to show respect to the legacy and material contribution of the Girmit forefathers.
“And in recent years with the spread of social media and greater awareness of this history more stories are being shared.”
Girmit Day is marked on May 14th every year.
The first batch of indentured labourers arrived in 1879 – 139 years ago on board the Leonidas.
