The Fiji Women’s Forum has welcomed the announcement of women candidates contesting this year’s election.

The Forum in a statement says it stands by its position on the enhancement of women’s participation in decision-making and democratization processes including temporary special measures (TSMs).

The Co-convenors of The Forum say it is especially important as they are part of a national process of rebuilding agency for political participation including at local government and national parliamentary system.

In 2014, 18% of women contested the election and this has increase to 24% this year.

The Forum says there is an increase of 6% with the hope of seeing more women get voted into parliament in ensuring greater accountability to gender equality commitments.

The Forum believes it is high time women claim their rightful place in Parliament and country’s leadership.
