The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre has commended the handing down of an eleven year jail term to a 74 year-old grandfather for the rape of his 7 year old grand-daughter.

Coordinator Shamima Ali commends the judiciary for recognizing the importance of putting in place heavy penalties for those who commit such heinous crimes.

The court heard that the grandfather fondled the girl early last year – which wa witnessed by the girls mother who then complained to her husband.

The old man was then evicted from the home and the matter was reported to police.

The Court stated that the old man betrayed the trust of his grand-daughter and made her insecure….and that cannot be accepted.

A domestic restraining order has been placed against the man – who is now prohibited to have any sort of contact with the grand-daughter.
