The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre has embarked on a fundraising drive to purchase a home for young women who are survivors of sexual abuse.

Centre Director Shamima Ali says the project is aimed at supporting survivors of sexual abuse who are in school and have no alternative safe haven to call home.

“We are fundraising at the moment for a, the home that we are setting up in Suva for sexually, survivors of sexual abuse and particularly when they’re over 17 and creating an exit strategy for them in terms of the their education, so they don’t, you know they become very vulnerable at that time so they’re not open to other exploitation and so on.”

Fiji-born Australian-based jeweler Nazli Asgar contributed more than 200 pieces of jewelry for the fundraising.

Asgar says the project by FWCC is an incentive to give something back to her country of the birth and help women survivors of sexual abuse.
