The Fiji Women’s Crisis Center’s Coordinator Shamima Ali says law enforcement need to do more.
Ali is responding to the recent incidents of intimate partner violence in which one woman died and another was set alight by her husband sustaining burns to her body.
On Saturday it was a homicide in Toorak Suva , a case of suspected domestic violence in the early hours of the morning that resulted in the death of 36 year old Losana McGowan.
On the same day, in the afternoon, in Lautoka, a husband doused his 26 year old wife with benezine in a shopping outlet and set her alight.
FWCC coordinator – Shamima Ali these cases are shocking and a stark reminder that more enforcement of the legislation is needed
Ali says while the legislation is strong, there are a number of examples where enforcement agencies are ineffective
Adding that in the case of McGowan who had worked and supported the NGO and other NGOs in their fight against gender violence, her death is a double tragedy
In both cases, the suspected assailants remain in police custody while investigations continue.
