The Fiji Sugar Corporation Board is expected to decide on the next steps for the railway upgrade for the sector.
Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Sugar – Yogesh Karan says with the initial study done by the Indian government, the onus is now on FSC to direct its progress.
“I’ve written to the CEO for FSC to review the report and advise government how they want to proceed with their plans regarding the railway upgrade.”
Karan says years of neglect have added to the sugar railway’s decline with its repair cost expected to run in the tens of millions of dollars.
Meanwhile, India’s High Commissioner to Fiji – Vishvas Sapkal says his government is working on a more in-depth study following on from the pro-feasibility study on the Sugar railways for the development of a passenger railway network for Fiji.
