The Fiji Red Cross Society is looking at empowering all its sixteen branches across the country to be more independent.

FRCS Director General Filipe Nainoca says this is to ensure that the branches are able to work on their own and provide immediate relief to their respective communities in times of disasters.

Nainoca says these branches act as first responders’ up until the main office steps in, in times of natural disasters.

” One of the important aspects of our work is the low cost activity that are conducted by the branches. And so these low cost activities are funded by the branches themselves. So for them to have the capacity to be able to respond immediately which includes funding of their own before support comes from the national office.”

He says these branches get funds from public donations and even carry out fundraising activities to supplement their operational costs.
