FRCA concerned with illegal substances

Local authorities are trying to determine how illegal substances are passing through Fiji undetected.

The recent discovery of 26 undeclared gold bars in Suva last week has posed questions on this.

Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority CEO Jitoko Tikolevu says they lack the equipment and technology – which cost a lot of money.

“We do lack tools and equipment. At the moment – we don’t have x-ray machines at the wharf or in that matter any other tools to detect illegal activities – things happening in port and as well as things exported out of the country.”

Tikolevu maintains that their officers are doing all they can to ensure what comes into Fiji and what goes out, is legal and that Fiji is safe.
