The Fiji Roads Authority will be constructing a temporary Bailey bridge beside the existing Vesidrua Bridge.
FRA CEO Johnathan Moore says they are undertaking preparatory works and contractors have been mobilized to the site.
The FRA’s latest inspection has indicated that there is deterioration of the Vesidrua Bridge.
However, they say the bridge is still serviceable if drivers observe the load restriction.
Construction of the Bailey bridge is anticipated to begin by mid next month.
Moore says their target is to open the temporary bridge in late June, 2019.
He says the new bridge will accommodate the legal weight limit.
The Land Transport Authority is monitoring the Vesidrua Bridge and continuing the enforcement of the weight restriction of 18 tonnes.
FRA is urging all heavy vehicle owners to please comply with the vehicle axle load limit of 18 tonnes.
