FRA explores alternative for Korotari Bridge

May 1, 2018 10:31 pm

The Fiji Roads Authority is exploring another alternative for the now unstable Korotari foot bridge in Labasa.

Chief executive, Jonathan Moore told Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama in a briefing yesterday that they have an alternative that is more resilient then the current structure.

Moore says they are looking at a real crossing across the river or a higher bridge that will be safe and resilient to the effects of climate change.

He says if given the go ahead now, they can start the project in mid-May and complete it by year end.

Moore adds in order for the suspension bridge to be used, they will need to use proper restraints to hold the bridge.

Bainimarama says this needs to be done before they start on the alternate crossing.

The Prime Minister will be visiting the Korotari Footbridge today.

The 123 meter long bridge suffered some damage during the recent flooding and is since closed to the public.
