Former PWD supervisor jailed

A former supervisor with Public Works Department who pleaded guilty to one count of accepting an advantage of one hundred and fifty dollars has been sentenced to five months imprisonment.

62 year old Kameli Yacalevu took the money from one Nitesh Naidu in 2010.

The court heard on the March 2nd, Naidu’s father went to see Yacalevu at the PWD Joinery Section to enquire about a job for his son.

Two days later Yacalevu accepted an advantage of $150.

Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne in passing sentence said bribery and corruption are like a cancer to a society and need to be dealt with harshly.

He stated public officials engaging in these practices should not be tolerated and need to be given immediate custodial sentences, to denounce their behavior and to deter other civil servants from engaging in such practices.
