A former provisional candidate of the National Federation Party and dentist has been charged with one count of rape.

The 66-year-old dentist of Nadi was arrested last week for allegedly raping a 53-year-old woman in her home in Nasinu.

It is alleged the suspect who is related to the victim had asked to rest at her home after attending a wedding in Suva.

The victim resides alone.

Police says the victim was inside her room when the suspect knocked on her bedroom door and allegedly forced himself on her.

It is also alleged the man assaulted her before raping her.

The victim later managed to free herself and locked herself in the bathroom where she raised alarm.

The man will appear at the Nasinu Magistrates Court today.
