Former COMPOL Andrew Hughes dies

Andrew Hughes, the Australian national and former Commissioner of police in Fiji has died at the age of 62.

Radio NZ reports that Hughes died in Cairns on Tuesday after suffering from bowel cancer.

Hughes was a high-ranking officer with the Australian Federal Police when he was seconded to Fiji in 2003.

He was Commissioner of Police in Fiji from 2003 to 2006.

He later worked at the United Nations in New York as police adviser for peacekeeping operations.
