Former Assistant Treasurer Charged for Corruption

A former employee of the iTaukei Affairs Board appeared in the Labasa Magistrates Court today on corruption-related offences.

Taniela Jerema is charged with one count each of obtaining a financial advantage and causing a loss.

It is alleged that he unlawfully acquired $9,280 when he was employed as the Assistant Provincial Treasurer for the Bua Provincial Council between 2016 and 2017.

The amount was initially received as payments made by individuals to the various accounts held by the Council and instead of depositing it Jerema allegedly kept it for himself.

FICAC lawyer informed the court that first phase disclosures were served.

Jerema has been released on $500 bail and ordered to report to the FICAC Office every Monday and Friday, not to interfere with prosecution witnesses and to surrender all travel documents.

The matter was adjourned to 8th October.
